Groundbreaking Ceremony for Diné College Shiprock Agriculture Multipurpose Center (AMC)
19th July 2024
Shiprock, NM – Diné College announced the groundbreaking ceremony for the Shiprock Agriculture Multipurpose Center (AMC), which took place on Friday, July 19, 2024, at 10 a.m. The Shiprock AMC is dedicated to supporting the education of students and Navajo farmers and ranchers.
“Today, we celebrate the groundbreaking of Diné College’s new Agricultural Building. This milestone was achieved through the valuable support of the Navajo Nation, the state of New Mexico, and the Diné College Land Grant,” said Greg Bigman, Vice-Chair of the Board of Regents, Diné College. “Their commitment has enabled our expansion and enhanced educational programs. Our Board of Regents’ collaboration was crucial. This facility symbolizes our united efforts towards growth and a brighter, sustainable future.”
“The groundbreaking for this new Agricultural Building represents a significant step towards the future of the Navajo Nation and our economic development,” stated Dr. Charles “Monty” Roessel, President of Diné College. “Historically, we depended heavily on the coal economy, but with its decline, we must now pivot to new economic opportunities. This facility will enable us to explore new markets for our farmers through increased research and innovation. With advanced developments for producers and a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, we are opening new avenues and markets for them. This project is all about securing a prosperous future for our community.”
The facility will provide a range of services to the local communities. This includes offering educational programs for students and local agricultural producers. Additionally, it serves as the sole commercial kitchen in the Navajo Nation, enabling producers to adhere to food safety guidelines and standards. The space also provides classrooms and meeting rooms. Which in turn enhances economic opportunities and educational experiences for both students and producers.
“The new Agricultural Building will certainly benefit our ranchers and farmers by providing new opportunities and expanding our operations,” stated Benita Litson, Director at the Land Grant Extension Office of Diné College, “As we move forward, it’s essential to prioritize food safety measures. Equally important are advancements in meat science, sustainable crop and livestock production methods, and practical strategies for connecting producers with alternative markets to support their growth and success.”
The facility will serve as the central location for Diné College’s Agricultural Bachelor Degree Program. This program provides students with the opportunity to specialize in two key areas: Animal Science and Plant Science. Upon enrolling in the program, students will acquire practical skills pertinent to agricultural sciences and sustainable farming practices.
“As a state legislator, it is within our capability to secure funding from the State of New Mexico,” stated Senator Shannon D. Pinto, New Mexico Legislature, “Having representation within a district allows us to support vital projects and programs. I share Diné College’s vision, particularly for the Shiprock community and its neighboring areas. Once this project is underway and people see the benefits, it will inspire further development initiatives.”
The new Agricultural Building in Shiprock exemplifies the strength of the partnership between Diné College, the Navajo Nation, and the state of New Mexico. It drives economic growth, sustainable agriculture, and job creation while honoring and aligning with Diné College’s cultural and educational heritage.
