Graduates Celebrate Achievement at Diné College Commencement
16th December 2024
TSAILE, Ariz. – Diné College celebrated a meaningful milestone Friday morning as the Class of 2024 gathered for its commencement ceremony, marking the achievements of 137 graduates. The event highlighted the resilience and dedication of students earning master’s, bachelor’s, associate, and certificate degrees at the historic institution proudly rooted in Navajo culture.
Charly Edsitty, television journalist at KTRK-ABC in Houston, Texas, delivered the keynote address, encouraging graduates to remain adaptable and authentic to themselves. Reflecting on her career, Edsitty shared, “I thought my life would follow one path, but life had other plans. No matter where your path leads, remember to forge your own way. It’s up to you to make it to your destination.”
Edsitty also emphasized the power of perseverance. “Mistakes are part of growth,” she told graduates. “How you recover from setbacks will determine your success. Never let a mistake hold you back.”
Dr. Alysa Landry, provost at Diné College, celebrated the students’ accomplishments and the institution’s profound legacy. “Today is your day,” Dr. Landry remarked. The education you’ve received blends academic rigor with rich cultural heritage, making your degree from Diné College truly unique.”
Acting President Bo Lewis praised the graduates as trailblazers. “These students represent a landmark of achievement for our college,” she stated. “You are the embodiment of strength, adaptability, and hope.
We look forward to seeing the ways you’ll shape the future.”
The ceremony also highlighted Diné College’s prominence as the first tribally controlled college in the U.S., founded in 1968. Graduates participated in generations-old traditions, like the hooding ceremony for master’s students.
Edsitty concluded with inspiration for the graduates. “Always carry the wisdom of your culture and ancestors. With hard work and authenticity, you will make them proud.”
Graduates now join the ranks of Diné College Alumni, equipped to forge paths rooted in education and cultural identity.
