Diné College Showcases Critical Inquiry at 2025 AIHEC Student Conference
RAPID CITY, SD – Diné College students demonstrated academic excellence and cultural insight while participating in the Critical Inquiry category at the 2025 American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) Student Conference. Held at the Ramkota Hotel and Conference Center, the event carried the theme, “Ancient Wisdom, the Foundation of Our Future: Sovereignty, Unity, and Strength for Future Generations.”
The Critical Inquiry team representing Diné College included four students: Nanibah Bigman, Hailey Tomasiyo, Madison Begay, and Terance Woody. Guided by their coach, Sterling Walter, the team analyzed and presented research on the chosen topic, examining the profound impact of residential schools on Native communities, their cultures, and languages.
“Critical Inquiry provides students with an opportunity to develop their research and analytical skills,” said Walter. “This competition tasked our team with selecting one of three thought-provoking questions. They decided to explore how residential schools shaped Native communities, which is an issue deeply rooted in our shared history and current focus on cultural preservation. Their goal was to present well-researched, dynamic insights to an audience of expert judges, including academics and community elders.”
The Critical Inquiry competition required participants to present their findings in front of a panel of judges, strictly adhering to a 20- to 30-minute time limit. The judges, selected for their expertise in the field, evaluated the presentations using a detailed rubric. Diné College’s participation underscores its commitment to fostering intellectual growth and cultural understanding among its students.
The AIHEC Student Conference serves as a platform for Indigenous students from tribal colleges across the country to share knowledge, showcase their skills, and celebrate the traditions of Native communities. The event highlights meaningful discussions about sovereignty and unity while empowering students for generations to come.
