Diné College Hosts Successful Vaccination Clinic for World Rabies Day, Promoting Pet Health and Community Safety
26th September 2024
Tsaile, AZ – On September 26th, Diné College successfully hosted a World Rabies Day vaccination clinic, organized in collaboration with Dr. Scott Bender and his Veterinary Science (AGR 215) and Animal Physiology (BIO 425) students. A total of 65 dogs and 26 cats were vaccinated, marking a proactive step in promoting community health and responsible pet care, despite the Navajo Nation’s continued freedom from terrestrial rabies.
The clinic, held on the Diné College campus, attracted pet owners from across the Navajo Nation who recognized the importance of vaccinating their animals to prevent rabies exposure. While terrestrial rabies is not present on the Navajo reservation, the clinic aimed to ensure pets remain protected from potential exposures to bat wildlife rabies, which still pose a risk.
One memorable moment involved a cat that escaped during the event. Thanks to the quick response of student volunteers, the feline was safely recaptured and vaccinated, much to the owner’s relief. The incident highlighted the commitment of the students to both animal welfare and their educational experience.
This World Rabies Day event not only raised awareness but also emphasized the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of rabies in areas where rabies may still exist. Pet owners expressed gratitude for the clinic and praised the students for their dedication and professionalism. Through ongoing education and community outreach, the people of the Navajo Nation are working to address animal health challenges and ensure pets and people alike remain safe from diseases like rabies.
World Rabies Day is observed globally to promote rabies prevention and to highlight the disease’s impact on both human and animal health. The efforts at Diné College demonstrate the value of community-driven health initiatives, contributing to a safer and healthier future for all.
Special recognition goes to Dr. Scott Bender, DVM for his leadership and dedication to hands-on student learning. His guidance not only facilitated the smooth operation of the event but also deepened students’ understanding of the critical role they play in preventing disease and promoting animal welfare within their communities.
