Diné College Hosts SafeTALK Training to Address Suicide Prevention

25th September 2024

TSAILE, AZ – The Diné College Student Mental Health Wellness Program, in collaboration with Tsehootsooi Medical Center’s Health Promotion & Disease Prevention Department, invites students, staff, faculty, and community members to participate in the SafeTALK Training, today from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ned Hatathli Center on Diné College’s Tsaile campus.

SafeTALK, a globally recognized program, is designed to equip attendees with practical tools to identify individuals who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts and provide them with the support they need. Participants will learn how to recognize warning signs, engage in conversation, and intervene with appropriate actions that could potentially save lives.

This training is crucial, particularly in rural communities like those served by Diné College, where access to mental health care remains limited. According to Mental Health America (2024), rural areas have fewer mental health professionals and often struggle with inadequate access to care. Suicide rates in rural regions are notably higher than in urban areas, making it even more critical to provide this type of training.
