American Indian College Fund Grant Cultivates Student Success Through Powerful Professional Development Series

Crownpoint, NM. Diné College recently hosted a highly impactful professional development series, made possible by American Indian College Fund’s Cultivating Native Student Success (CNSS) Grant, focusing on the strategic goal of accessibility to enhance student growth. The series featured two dynamic presenters who provided invaluable insights and practical strategies for fostering a thriving academic environment.

The first session was led by Mrs. Shawna Becenti, Head of School at Navajo Preparatory, who delivered a powerful presentation on best practices for student success. Mrs. Becenti emphasized the importance of aligning the College’s mission and vision with all activities, utilizing data-driven approaches, and providing robust student resources. She challenged attendees to reflect on their “why” and encouraged the institution to celebrate small victories and showcase its core values. Her workshop included hands-on activities designed to promote reflection and forward-thinking, empowering participants to shape a more effective and supportive learning environment.

Following Mrs. Becenti’s insightful session, Honorable Dr. Andy Nez, (Crystal, Fort Defiance, Red Lake, Sawmill) a member of the 25th Navajo Nation Council, Health, Education & Human Services Committee, presented a detailed “corn stalk model” for growth, a concept deeply relatable to the Navajo community’s agricultural background. Dr. Nez highlighted the interconnectedness of education, Diné way of life and values, equality, and community. He stressed the importance of positive mindset planning, reliance on natural instincts, frequent student check-ins, and the recognition of diversity. He encouraged the College to build student confidence by celebrating achievements, symbolized by “tassels,” and reciprocating rewards.

Both presenters underscored the instrumental role of every member of the institution—students, faculty, staff, and administrators—in realizing the strategic design for student success and academic growth. The series provided a platform for the College community to engage in deep reflection and align with the institution’s foundational goals. Forty (40) participants attended the hybrid event, which included students, faculty, staff, and community partners.

Looking ahead, the next professional development session will focus on campus health and wellness and will be held on April 10, 2025 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Newcomb Microsite. This hybrid event will continue to build upon the momentum of the previous sessions, fostering a holistic approach to student development.

“This professional development series has allowed our community to engage in and reflect upon the College’s foundation in relation to the Strategic Design, which will enhance student growth and academic opportunities for the future to come,” said Winifred Jumbo, Director of External Campuses. “We are committed to continuing these series to ensure we collectively understand and achieve our goals as a unified team of students, faculty, staff, and administrators.”

Diné College extends its sincere gratitude to Mrs. Shawna Becenti, Dr. Andy Nez, Tyrone J. Begay, Tyrel Pablo and the American Indian College Fund for their invaluable contributions to this transformative professional development series.
