Achieve60AZ’s New Board Member Will Give a Voice to Arizona’s Rural and Diverse Student Populations

PHOENIX, AZ— Diné College President Charles “Monty” Roessel will join the Achieve60AZ Board of Directors, according to a news release. The addition of Roessel to the Board of Directors represents the organization’s ongoing commitment to implementing a broad approach to improving educational attainment that takes Arizona’s diverse population into consideration.
“To achieve our attainment goal, it’s imperative that we address the issues that impact education for students and adult learners across the state of Arizona,” said Achieve60AZ Executive Director Rachel Yanof. “That’s why we are so happy to add Dr. Roessel to our Board of Directors.”
The newest addition to Achieve60AZ’s Board of Directors will aid in furthering the organization’s mission of reaching Arizona’s educational attainment goal: to have 60 percent of adults ages 25 to 64 hold a postsecondary degree or credential by 2030, the release states.
“Education has changed and will continue to change as we navigate and make sense of the new normal in a post COVID-19 world. We need to keep a pulse of what that change means for all of Arizona,” said Roessel. “I’m proud to join the board of Achieve60AZ, an organization dedicated to helping Arizona move forward and adapt to those changes and improving the state of education for all students.”
Roessel is an educator, a catalyst for academic innovation, and higher education leader. In 2017, he became the 18th president of Diné College, spearheading its transformation from a two-year college into a four-year institution. As the first established tribal college, Diné College has served a predominantly Navajo student population for more than 50 years. Under Dr. Roessel’s leadership, Diné College has established four new trans-disciplinary schools, including the School of Diné Studies and Education; the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math; the School of Arts, Humanities and English; and the School of Business and Social Science. He has helped launch trailblazing initiatives such as the Navajo Sovereignty Institute, the Navajo Cultural Arts Program, and taken steps toward establishing the first Navajo law school.
