TSAILE, Ariz. — A number of returning students at Diné College are finding it difficult to not consider re-enrolling at the country’s first tribally-controlled institution.
Reynold Draper registered for classes Thursday at the college’s main campus in Tsaile. Draper is a Chinle High School graduate and a former member of Diné College’s cross-country and archery teams.
“For me it’s close to home and the tuition is very affordable,” Draper, a business administration major, said. “Plus, you meet people, students and professors, from everywhere. That’s just as important to what you learn in the classroom.”
Diné College, established in 1968 in Many Farms, Ariz., has a $55 per credit hour tuition rate, which attracts students from throughout the world. The student-to-teacher ratio is 14 to 1, which means more direct involvement with teachers.
Draper said he wants to advance at the company he works for in Tsaile. He said to do that he needs a college degree. Having one from Diné College is a big plus, he said.
Diné College’s on-site registration began Thursday. Classes and late registration begin Aug. 19.
“Here at Diné College, we are empowering students with a great education and the skills and experiences that allow them to live and work anywhere on the Navajo Nation and beyond,” Marie Nez, vice president of external relations at Diné College, said. “The students have a lot of different options to consider upon graduating from Diné College.”
