TSAILE, Ariz. — A little more than 200 people attended the 21st annual Diné Studies Conference from Oct. 25 through 27. The conference was hosted by Diné College and featured talks and group sessions on such topics as Navajo Nationalism, Reflections on the Navajo Treaty of 1868 and Navajo Land and Economic Development.
“This was a very positive gathering whereby a variety of subjects was talked about pertaining to the Navajo people,” Miranda Haskie, a Diné College sociology instructor and an organizer of the event, said.
Avery Denny, also a Diné College faculty member, said his talk about traditional versus commercial tobacco significance went across well. Denny, who is a medicine man, talked about the history and use of tobacco on and off the Navajo Reservation — including how it must be used during various Navajo ceremonies.
The event drew Native American educators from around the Four Corners. A joint welcoming address was given by Diné College President Monty Roessel and Haskie.
