SHIPROCK, N.M. – Diné College's Shiprock campus celebrated the grand opening of its new Math and Science building, marking a significant milestone in educational advancement for the Navajo Nation. The state-of-the-art facility, funded by $5 million from New Mexico's General Obligation Bond D, is poised to transform STEM education and bolster the local workforce.

The event commenced at 7:00 a.m. with a traditional blessing by Rex Lee Jim, accompanied by Diné College student Johanna Sandoval. College Provost Dr. Alysa Landry extended a warm welcome to attendees, followed by insights from James Tutt, Dean of the School of STEM, on the project's history and context.

The Honorable Andy Nez (Crystal, Fort Defiance, Red Lake, Sawmill) 25th Navajo Nation Council and Greg Bigman, Vice-Chairperson of the Board of Regents, delivered speeches highlighting the community's commitment to education. The ceremony concluded with closing remarks by Bo Lewis, Vice President of Finance and Administration, culminating in a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tours of the new building.

"This facility stands as a testament to the voters of New Mexico who have invested in our future," said Dr. Charles “Monty” Roessel, President, Diné College. "With their support, we are better positioned to offer our students cutting-edge education in math, science, and technology."

The 28,846-square-foot building features advanced classrooms and laboratories designed for chemistry, biology, and physics. It aligns with the college's mission to promote STEM-related education. By preparing students for STEM careers, the facility is expected to have a lasting impact on the local economy.

Bond D, which passed with nearly 66 percent of the vote, underscores the importance of higher education funding in New Mexico. It contributes to infrastructure improvements and employment opportunities in the state. This initiative not only enhances educational facilities but also supports the broader economic landscape by creating jobs for architects, planners, and construction workers.

As New Mexico continues to prioritize educational development, Diné College's new Math and Science building represents a beacon of hope and progress for future generations.
