Window Rock, Ariz. – The Diné College, Window Rock Center, embarked on a community service that was generated by a Learning Center coordinator in 2017. Since then, the center has been actively involved in the Arizona Department of Transportation’s “Adopt a Highway,” a program that allows individuals, organizations, and businesses to take responsibility for cleaning up a designated stretch of highway.
Volunteers commit to picking up litter along their adopted segment at least three times a year. “We have students and staff come and out to pick trash on a one-mile segment at Milepost #475 from the Navajo Nation Fairgrounds to the Arizona-New Mexico borderline; we try to commit to the project three times a year,” said Nicolas J. Begay, Center Manager at Diné College, Window Rock Center.
Participating in the program encourages community beautification and ownership, which provides recognition through signage, helps reduce litter and pollution, and offers team-building opportunities for organizations and businesses.
