Diné College’s Assistant Professor and Digital Services Librarian, Wins the 2023 Movers & Shakers Award

TSAILE, AZ. – The Library Journal has announced that Rhiannon Sorrell, Assistant Professor and Instruction & Digital Services Librarian from Diné College, has been named a winner of the 2023 Movers & Shakers award. The award recognizes professionals who have made a significant impact on the library field through their innovative ideas, leadership, and dedication to service.
Assistant Professor Sorrell is being honored for her efforts to restore Native narratives via two projects funded through National Endowment for the Humanities grants. “Tribesourcing Southwest Film: Digital Repatriation” aims to replace often inaccurate and disrespectful narration by white outsiders of early 20th-century films in the American Indian Film Gallery at the University of Arizona with narration provided by Diné storytellers that allows the films to reflect Native context. “Digitizing the Moving Images of the Colorado Plateau and the American Southwest” aims to digitize rare moving images from Diné College Kinyaa’áanii Library’s collection, in partnership with Northern Arizona University’s Cline Library.
“We are proud of Assistant Professor Sorrell’s accomplishment. She brings a vision and energy to the field that is exemplified by this award and Diné College is the richer for it,” said Diné College President, Dr. Roessel.
The Library Journal’s Movers & Shakers award is one of the most prestigious honors in the library profession, and Assistant Professor Sorrell is among a select group of professionals to receive the award this year as well as, to the best of our knowledge, the first Tribal Colleges or Universities librarian to receive it.
